Bwindi Impenetrable National Park


Its found in Uganda in the South Western Uganda on the edge of the Albertine Rift and its shared by three different district which are Kisoro, Kanungu and Kabale districts.The distance from kampala to Bwindi park headquarters is approximately 534km and takes 10 hours drive. And its bordered by Democratic Republic of Congo in the west

Bwindi is a home of 326 gorillas, which is almost a half of the world’s population of mountain Gorillas. And its believed to be the true African jungle and covers 33,000 hectares with about 400 birds including the rare forest birds for example are the African green broadbill Pseudocalyptomena graueri, dwarf honeyguide Indicator pumilio, Kivu ground thrush Zoothera tanganjicae, Lagden's bushshrike Malaconotus lagdeni, Chaplin's flycatcher Muscicapa lend, Oberlander's ground thrush Z. oberlaenderi, Grauer's rush warbler Bradypterus graueri, and dusky crimsonwing Cryptospiza shelleyi. Other rare birds are short-tailed warbler Hemitasia neumanni, white-bellied robin chat Cossypher roberti, Fraser's eagle owl Bubo poensis, white-bellied robin chat Cossypher roberti, Grauer's warbler Graueria vittata, yellow-eyed black flycatcher Melaenornis ardesiaca, montane double-collared sunbird Nectarinia ludovicenis and dusky twinspot Clytospiza cinereoinacea, 14 species of snakes, about 250 species of trees, 27 species of frogs, over 250 butterflies, chameleons, lizards, then 150 species of ferns, geckos, 20 chimpanzees for example l'Hoests guenon Cercopithecus lhoesti, red-tailed guenon C. ascanius schmidti, black-and-white colobus Colobus guereza, blue guenon C. mitis mitis, vervet C. aethiops, and olive baboon Papio anubis, skinks and the exciting mountain gorillas.
The altitude of Bwindi is about 1,190m to 2,607m. While the highest point occurs in Rwamunyonyi hill on its eastern edge, the lowest occurs in the northernmost tip of the park. And it’s a tropical kind of climate having 2 rainfall peaks which start from March to May and then from September to November. The range of the annual mean temperature is from 7-15°C as the minimum to 20-28°C as maximum.

The Batwa pygmies who were hunter-gatherers are believed to be the original inhabitants of the forest. And the other neighbouring people are the Bakiga, Barwanda and the Bafumbira and their population ranges from 350 people per square kilometer.
 Activities in Bwindi Impenetrable Park
Gorilla tracking

It is the major tourist activity in bwindi constiting of Four gorilla groups currently available daily for tourists. The groups include: Mubare group which consists of 10 gorillas and 1 silverback in 1993 this is when this group was opened to tourism. The second group is Habinyanja group which consists of 18 gorillas and 1 silverback opened in July 1998 for tourism. Rushegura group is the third group of Gorillas and consists of 10 gorillas and 1 silverback was opened in July 2002. And the fourth group is Nkuringo group with 19 gorillas and 2 silverbacks April 2004 was when it was opened to tourism.
Gorilla tracking is quite challenging therefore you have to be physically fit. The tracking experience starts at 8:30a.m local time. And time of tracking depends on where you are to find the group of gorillas that you are allocated.

WHAT TO BRING WHEN YOU ARE GOING TO TRACK THE GORILLAS
• Jungle shoes suitable for steep muddy slopes.
• Carry a rain jacket because the park is often wet.
• Ear plugs for those who feel uncomfortable with jungle sounds.
• Rain gear
• Sunscreen lotion, a hat(as the weather is unpredictable)
• Insect repellant
For conservation reasons, visits to the gorillas are tightlu controlled. The following rules apply and must be strictly adhered to:
• No one with a communicable disease is allowed to enter the park.
• Stay together in a tight group while with the gorillas, don’t surround them.
• Don’t get closer than 7 meters(21 feet) to the gorillas.
• Don’t use flashes while photographing the gorillas.
• Don’t eat or smoke when with the gorillas or within a distance of 200 meters from the gorillas.
• Turn away from the gorillas if you have to sneeze or cough. Cover your nose and mouth in the process.
• Burry all human feaces a minimum of one foot deep and ensure that the hole is properly covered.
• Don’t leave litter. All litter must be carried out of the park and disposed off properly.
• No person under 15 years is allowed to track gorillas.
• Don’t make loud noise or move suddenly.
• You are allowed a maximum of 1 hour with gorillas.
• Don’t spit on vegetation or soil while in the park, use your hankie or other garment.

OTHER ACTIVITIES.

Nature walks
There are 4 fantastic hiking trails where you will have an opportunity to see primates, butterflies, species of birds, trees and other organisms. And this usually starts at 9:00 a.m in the morning after breakfast and 2:15 p.m in the afternoon after Lunch.

The popular waterfall trail
This provides an attractive feature of the forest with a profusion of tree ferns, epithytic ferns, orchids and bwindi’s colourful array of butterflies. The trail leads to 3 delightful crystal clear waterfalls typifies your impression of a tropical rainforest.

The Munyaga river
The trail is provides short walks for the tourists with very little time to spare. It gives you can opportunity to see birds and primates of the forest edge.

The Rushura trail
The trail commands expansive views across the western rift valley floor. To the west, Congo’s Parc Nationale des virungas provides a spectacular backdrop and on clear days lake edward and the rwenzori mountains are visible.

The 5.2 km Muzabajiro Loop Trail
It offers breath taking views of bwindi forest, western rift valley and the virungas. On the way, you witness hundreds of pre-historic tree ferns. The top of this trail is a great place for a picnic lunch.

The River Ivi
This trail is the longest in the park and will occupy you for a full day, it is highly recommended for bird watchers

 Bird watching
It holds over 346 species of birds and contains 90% of all albertine rift endemics, difficult or impossible to see in any other part of East Africa. For the experienced bird watcher, they can identify up to 100 species in a day! You can visit buhoma and Ruhija for this dream.  Buhoma village walk
The village walk is managed by the local community and takes up to three hours. This walk introduces you to different interesting sites such as a typical rural homestead, then a visit to the local traditional healer, banana beer brewing demonstrations site and much more.

There will be a traditional performance in the evening which is presented by women and orphan groups. Then proceed from these go directly to improve the welfare of the families around the park.

Gorilla Forest Camp

It is situated on a hillside giving you an opportunity to view the forest where the mountain gorillas reside. This fabulous tented camp is within walking distance of the point where visitors meet to start gorilla trekking. And consists of 8 self contained double rooms, each with two self contained queen sized beds, a private wooden deck and bathroom facilities. The lodge also has a nice spacious dining and bar area with power for lighting and recharging of video equipment.

Mantana Tented Camp

This classic tented camp adjoins a small patch of forest with birdlife is situated high up on a hillside off the main route to the park headquarters. Each tent on a private deck with spectacular view caters for two persons, they all have solar lighting, an eco-friendly toilet and a private dressing area. Their meals are generally of a high standard and are of international cuisines.

Volcanoes Bwindi Lodge
Bwindi Lodge overlooks the primeval Bwindi forest and it is the perfect place to experience the magic of this impenetrable forest.
The tented camp that was there previously has been replaced by a newly built stunning eco-lodge comprising eight bandas.

Self Contained Cottages
It’s a medium ranged lodge and it’s less than five minutes walk away from the National Park offices. It offers en suite accommodation in eight, self contained en suite spacious twin / double traditionally built cottage units with hot and cold running water. The cottages and their furnishings have been renovated and improved to provide comfort to the guests. It also consists of the private verandahs giving you opportunity to views tropical rain forests. And there is provision of the solar system for lighting in the cottages and for video and camera charging. There is also a provision of a fireplace being lit in the lounge area giving clients an opportunity to relax especially in the cool evenings. And it also has a well spacious dining area and they provide the international cuisine and also the bar where you can have the local beers, sodas, spirits, wines and waragi (Ugandan gin) for purchase.
Lake Kitandara Tented Camp
It’s a medium ranged lodge with an east African style tented camp. It’s situated near the park providing tented accommodation in self contained double tents. With the best international cuisine and a very good view for the park.
The Gorilla Resort
It’s a new Intimate safari camp with a breath-taking view of the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is located at Buhoma. The camp has been well constructed with local materials retaining sympathy with the local environment and surroundings. The camp has facilities like the Restaurant and the international cuisines are served, Bar with different types of drinks, Suspended deck that features a campfire overlooking the Tropical Rain Forest and the Lounge giving the clients comfort to relax and meditate what happened during the day.

Buhoma Community Rest Camp uganda

This attractive camp is set in wooded grounds inside the park entrance and is run by the local community who clean and look after it. Its locally built hut with the local materials that provides communal accommodation. There are before self contained and non self contained rooms incase you need self contained rooms then you book them in advance. And there is a provision of bedding, a restaurant, which serves basic but freshly prepared food and a bar.

Bwindi View Bandas, Uganda

Its situated opposite the community campsite and privately owned and run by a local business lady. Its considerably cheap but the grounds are less atrractive
